Columbia's Tinari invited to Minnesota United camp
NEW YORK – Columbia University Andrew Tinari has received a training camp invitation to play with MLS expansion team Minnesota United FC.
Tinari learned the news over the weekend, after he was not taken in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, but he received interest from several MLS teams.
For the third time in his career, Tinari was a first team All-Ivy League selection in 2016, starting 15 of 16 games for the conference champion Lions. The Holbrook, N.Y, native scored a goal at Michigan State and added two assists on the season, playing primarily in the midfield.
Tinari led the team in assists with four during his junior season and also was the Ivy League rookie of the year in 2013, tallying five goals and three assists.
Minnesota United provides a unique opportunity for Tinari, as the expansion team is still filling out its roster.
The Loons are coached by Adrian Heath, who most recently served as the head coach of Orlando City FC, and has played professionally Everton and Manchester City of the Premier League, among others.
The first preseason match for the Loons is slated for Feb. 9 at the Vancouver Whitecaps. That match will serve as one of three preseason matches, before Minnesota opens up the regular season at Portland Friday, March 3.
