LIU Brooklyn men nip NJIT, 1-0
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Redshirt freshman Romario Guscott's header in the 66th minute lifted LIU Brooklyn to a 1-0 victory NJIT in non-conference men's soccer Thursday.
Guscott outjumped defenders and headed the ball into the goal off of a right-wing cross out of the right corner and give LIU Brooklyn its first win since Sept. 4. The Blackbirds (3-5-2) had gone 0-4-2 since defeating St. Bonaventure. NJIY fell to 2-5-2.
Guscott's goal was his third this season. Filip Nordstrom and Naeem Charles were credited with assists.
Both teams got quality goalkeeping, with redshirt junior Logan Keys stopping five shots to earn the clean sheet.
Keys got some help from the woodwork only 51 seconds from time, when a header by Jimmy Myers hit off the goalpost.
Earlier, Keys made a point-blank save in the 71st minute on a shot by Danny Cordeiro that was so dangerous his teammates momentarily started to celebrate what they thought was a goal an instant before they realized Keys had denied him.
On the other end, NJIT keeper Marco Luna finished with four saves. He kept the deficit at 1-0 when he made two saves in a span of 15 seconds in the 86th minute. He, too, got help from the goal frame, as a shot by LIU's Nahuel Medina hit the post in the 80th minute.
NJIT hosts St. Francis Brooklyn Saturday at 5 p.m.
