Wagner women down LIU Brooklyn, 5-3
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Backed by two goals apiece from senior captains Sydney McNutt and Megan Fritz, the Wagner women earned a 5-3 victory over LIU Brooklyn in their first Northeast Conference game Friday evening.
LIU Brooklyn jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jenn Peters in the 22nd minute. McNutt tied the game 10 minutes later after receiving a feed from sophomore Sandra Battista.
With five minutes remaining before intermission, Fritz gave the Seahawks a 2-1 lead, when Battista recorded her second helper of the match as Fritz fired the ball into the top-right corner of the net from 20 yards.
The Green & White struck first in the second half as senior Taylor Sackaris converted a Kristen Bischoff cross for a 3-1 advantage.
The Blackbirds answered back with a goal from Madison Gomez, trimming the deficit to 3-2. The Seahawk co-captains added two more goals that gave Wagner a 5-2 advantage with Fritz connecting for her team-leading fifth goal of the season on a shot from 25 yards for the team's fourth goal.
Two minutes later, McNutt's second direct free kick goal this season gave the Seahawks a three-goal lead. LIU Brooklyn rallied, but Marian Awad's goal was not enough.
Goalkeeper Katie Viscardi earned her first win of this season after recording five saves.
Wagner will travel to Fairfield, Conn. to face Sacred Heart Oct. 7 at noon.
