SOME EXTRA EFFORT
Seton Hall women down Army in OT, 1-0
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Siobhan McGovern scored in the 97th minute to lift the Seton Hall women to a 1-0 victory over Army at Clinton Field Monday night.
The win evened the Pirates record at 1-1-0 while Army fell to 0-2-0.
A minute prior, the hosts penetrated into the penalty area and attempted a centering pass that the Pirates deflected and cleared. Roach picked up the ball just outside of the box and pushed forward. Two Black Knight defenders converged on Roach, but she hit a long ball over them just as she was about to get hit.
The ball found its way to a running McGovern, who went 1 v 1 with goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia. Cassalia made a diving stop on McGovern, but she never got control of the ball, which trickled back to the Seton Hall player. McGovern pushed it into the net as she was hit by another defender.
McGovern's goal and Roach's assist were the first in their respective careers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Anna MacLean made three saves and recorded her second career shutout.
The Pirates have defeated Army three consecutive times, including the last two under head coach Rick Stainton.
Seton Hall will host Quinnipiac at Owen T. Carroll Field Monday at 7 p.m.
