Putting the Cosmos-NYC FC derby into perspective

Long-time New York soccer fan Will Smith puts the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup game between the Cosmos and New York City FC into perspective.

The match New York soccer fans have been clamoring for is finally soon upon us. The Cosmos and New York City FC will face off in Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup play at Hofstra University on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Here are the "Starting XI" items to contemplate in advance of this match:

1. Will fans come out in numbers to Hempstead on a weeknight to see this?

2. Will NYC FC fans outnumber Cosmos supporters?

3. This is a match between the team that, depending on who you speak with, either rejected MLS or was rejected by MLS vs. The Almighty Don's $100 million baby.

4. Here is NYC FC, the team that, based on their record, isn't good enough for Major League Soccer vs. the team that, based on its record, is too good for the North American Soccer League.

5. Will NYC FC field its first team lineup, knowing full well that having its first team lineup lose to an NASL will be deeply humiliating? Or:

6. Will head coach Jason Kreis rest his starters? That way, if NYC FC wins, MLS can say, "Ha! Look how superior we are! We won with our reserves!" And, if they lose, they can say, "Well, we didn't play our starters! What did you expect?"

7. This is essentially a battle of NASL economic libertarianism vs. MLS-style activist government interventionism. It's like Adam Smith vs. John Maynard Keynes in cleats, isn't it?

8. Which will have a greater impact on fandom? An exhilarating Cosmos win or a crushing NYC FC loss? Or is it the other way around?

9. If NYC FC fields its best 11 and loses, will Kreis be fired?

10. Who will win the battle of Spanish goal-scoring legends? The Cosmos' Raul or NYC FC's David Villa?

11. How soon after the match, regardless of result, will the losing team start making excuses?

We will find out all on June 17. See you there.
