The women who fought through adversity to earn the title deserve all of their well-earned accolades for being the best in the world. That the United States last won the Women's World Cup 16 years ago demonstrates how difficult it is to attain that pinnacle, and how much those ladies deserve this.
For that reason, the only league and the only clubs that legitimately have a right to be in Friday's parade are the clubs in the National Women's Soccer League. This is a remarkable moment for women's soccer in the USA, and this moment belongs to them and them alone.
There is no justification for Major League Soccer, New York City FC and the Red Bulls to exploit the USWNT's victory for their own marketing ends by trying to foist their agenda on the public by shoehorning themselves into the parade, even going so far as to raffle off a spot on a parade float which they have no business occupying.
Women's soccer needs and deserves the boost that they themselves earned with this victory.
The NWSL lags behind the men's leagues in the USA in attendance and visibility on television. This is a moment to be savored by the ladies who won the title, and this is their moment alone. Shame on MLS, NYC FC and the Red Bulls for this blatant case of "stolen valor."
