Italians score goals, but not enough as they miss the NPSL playoffs

The Brooklyn Italians' 7-2 victory over NY Athletic Club was considered a hollow victory by the players, coaches, and fans. Before the National Premier Soccer League season, 10 wins, one loss and one tie appeared the most likely and plausible path to advancing to the North East playoffs. However, the Red Bulls Under-23 team had an identical record, and Brooklyn had to overcome an insurmountable goal difference in its final game to have a chance at the Final Four in Alabama.

The Brooklyn Italians won a pair of games over the weekend to improve their record to 6-1-0. On Saturday they came from behind for a 2-1 win over the New Hampshire Mountaineers. On Sunday, after trailing 1-0 to the Boston Tea Men, they scored four unanswered goals for a 4-2 win.

Italians face Harrisburg in Open Cup

Few clubs in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup have the pedigree of the Brooklyn Italians. After all, they are two-time winners of the event, in 1979 and 1991. But head coach Joe Barone is quick to point out that this is not the Italians of the old days, when the club spent lavishly on players, very often employing former North American Soccer League players, and even U.S. National Team members.
