Rampone: 'His philosophy was very different'

Christie Rampone: "It's unfortunate. It's the game of soccer and the philosophy obviously wasn't what U.S. Soccer wanted, heading in a different direction." Needless to say, the sooner U.S. Soccer names a successor to the fired Tom Sermanni as U.S. national women's coach, the better it will be for the players, says international defender and team captain Christie Rampone. In her first interview about Sermanni's surprising dismissal two weeks ago Sunday, Rampone talked about how much she likes Sermanni, but also understands why he was shown the door.

Julie Johnson's goal gave the Chicago Red Stars a 1-0 win over the Western New York Flash. BOYDS, Maryland Diana Matheson scored two goals to lead the Washington Spirit to a 3-1 win over FC Kansas City Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

Riley puts his stamp on the championship Thorns

Paul Riley: "The expectations in Portland is that they expect to do it again. It's a lot harder in the second year." Taking over a championship side is never an easy task. Expectations always run high to repeat. But Portland Thorns FC coach Paul Riley has decided not to keep status quo, but to do it his way, even if it means changing the culture of the NWSL championship team.
