Chicharito leads Mexico to 3-0 win over Canada
VANCOUVER--Javier Hernandez had a goal and an assist as Mexico shut out Canada 3-0 in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying Friday at BC Place.
Chicharito opened the scoring with a powerful header off Miguel Layun's cross in the 31st minute, and set the table as Hirving Lozano made the score 2-0 with a shot to the near post eight minutes later.
Jesus Manuel Corona completed the rout in the 72nd minute, faking his way through the Canadian defense before blasting the ball past netminder Milan Borjan.
Canada managed only two shots on goal, and were outshot 19-7 overall, but were not without their scoring chances. Junior Hoilett and Cyle Larin both narrowly missed the target within a four-minute span starting in the 21st. Hoilett missed the mark again in the 36th.
Borjan did his best to keep things close, making six saves starting with an athletic stop on Hector Herrera's blast from the left side of the penalty area in the 11th minute. Before Hernandez broke the ice, Borjan had turned away dangerous shots by Andres Guardado and Layun. Hernandez and Hector Herrera also hit the post before the intermission. Marco Fabian was the third Mexico player to hit the woodwork, volleying a shot off the post in the 86th minute.
Mexico top Group A with a perfect 3-0-0 record and nine points. Canada drop to 1-1-1 and four points, good for second place.
El Tri hosts the return leg of the series Tuesday at Estadio Azteca.
