HOUSTON -- Jesus Corona scored in the 80th minute help Mexico secure the top spot in the Copa America Centenario's Group C with a 1-1 draw against Venezuela on Monday night at NRG Stadium.
With that first-place finish, Mexico most likely avoids a semifinal against FIFA World No. 1 Argentina, which currently leads Group D.
Jose Manuel Velazquez struck in the 10th minute for the visitors, who finished even with Mexico on seven points but lost out on the top spot on goal difference.
El Vino Tinto ended Mexico’s winning streak at 11 matches. With the draw, El Tri has still gone undefeated in its last 22 contests.
Velazquez put El Vino Tinto ahead in the 10th minute on a sensational half volley that resulted from a set piece.
Alejandro Guerra sent a free kick from the left toward the far post. Christian Santos headed back across goal to set up Velazquez’s vicious side volley into the roof of the net.
Corona equalized in the 80th minute, just moments after he failed to finish off a previous sensational run.
This time, he made no mistake, driving past four defenders inside the penalty area before hammering a finish that gave goalkeeper Jose Contreras no chance.
