Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon passed Tony Meola for second in all-time shutouts in MLS history after shutting out the Revolution on Aug. 16. Cannon has 63 shutouts in 236 games. Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is the league’s all-time shutout record holder with 74 in 293 games.

Struggling Rapids make coaching change
Fernando Clavijo is out as Colorado Rapids coach. The club said it has reached a mutually amicable agreement with the former U.S. National Team defender and that he is leaving the club for personal reasons. His dismissal has been rumored for several weeks.

Clint Mathis doesn't retire. He just returns to his old MLS clubs. Mathis, who most recently played with Ergotelis FC of the Greek SuperLeague, has returned to Real Salt Lake, the team announced Thursday.

Rumors fly as former Red Bulls coach catches game at HDC
Bruce Arena could be the next coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy, at least if Anschutz Sports Group CEO Tim Leiweke has his way. Arena, the former U.S. National Team coach, who was dismissed by the Red Bulls last season after little more than a year at the helm, was at the Home Depot Center for Thursday’s derby between the Galaxy and Chivas USA. He had dinner with Leiweke and watched the game from his box.

Keller signs with Seattle Sounders FC
After four World Cups and a lengthy career in Europe, goalkeeper Kasey Keller is returning to his home state of Washington to play for the expansion Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders' inaugural season begins in 2009.

The San Jose Earthquakes scored first Sunday against the Galaxy and earned a 3-2 win. The team is 4-1-1 this season when they score first. Their only loss when finding the net first came against Columbus on May 10. The Quakes say their all-time record when scoring first is 65-4-10, but most of those wins were by the team that is now the Houston Dynamo.
