GETTING THE 5 POINTS
Cosmos supporters give thumbs up to team's new ownership
By Michael Lewis
Their wish has been granted.
A little more than a month to the day that 5 Points asked the North American Soccer League team's owners to sell their controlling shares in the club, the Cosmos' supporters' group praised the pending news of Rocco B. Commisso as majority owner.
Commisso is finalizing purchase of the team, a deal that could be announced as early as this week.
This is what 5 Point said on twitter Saturday:
"As forever true supporters of the NEW YORK COSMOS, the 5 POINTS are exuberant at the fact today our club has announced that they will be back to defend their North American Soccer League championship in 2017! We are excited and eager to sit down with new ownership and aide in the rebuilding of our club and we look forward with great anticipation to opening day of the 2017 season when the NEW YORK COSMOS take to the pitch. Once again the 5 POINTS will stand along side them and support them with the passion that only we can bring to U.S. Soccer!"
The Cross Island Crew, La Banda Del Cosmos and the Borough Boys collectively are known as the 5 Points).
In a My Two Cents column on BigAppleSoccer.com, 5 Points wrote this letter about the Cosmos:
"Today, the 5 Points demand that Seamus O'Brien and Jeremy Wilkins sell their controlling share(s) in the New York Cosmos. We ask for this to happen immediately in an effort to save our 2017 season that would allow us not only to defend our 2016 NASL championship but to also continue the legacy of the New York Cosmos for years to come.
"Their improper management has brought us to the brink of existence and the 5 Points asks for a resolution to this impasse immediately. Furthermore, we ask the current owners for the immediate reinstatement of all staff, players, and coaches as well as the payment of any debts owed to them."
