Cosmos add national team midfielder Richard Menjivar
New York Cosmos have signed El Salvador national team midfielder Richard Menjivar, the team announced Thursday.
“We are very content to have Richard join the Cosmos,” Cosmos coach and sporting director Giovanni Savarese said. “He is a versatile midfielder who understands the game and will bring valuable experience to the squad.”
Menjivar, 26, and Cosmos’ teammates Andrés Flores and Irvin Herrera helped lead El Salvador to third place in the Copa Centroamericana, helping El Salvador qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Menjivar has earned 36 caps (one goal) with the national team.
Menjivar, a California native, began his NASL career with the Atlanta Silverbacks, making 22 appearances and being named to the NASL Best XI as they qualified for the 2013 Soccer Bowl (loss to the Cosmos). Menjivar made 17 appearances the San Antonio Scorpions won the 2014 Soccer Bowl. Menjivar, who also played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Rayo OKC, performed for the U.S. U-18 national team, joining the El Salvador senior national team for the 2013 Copa Centroamericana, also playing in the 2013 and 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cups.

The Cosmos will kick off the NASL season against Puerto Rico FC at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium March 25.
The Cosmos’ home-opener will be against Miami FC at MCU Park in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1.
