Cosmos sign former Granada midfielder Javi Marquez
The New York Cosmos have signed Spanish midfielder Javi Márquez, the team announced Friday.
“Javi is an exceptional player who will bring great experience and quality to our midfield,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said. “We look forward to seeing him on the field, as he will make our roster even more competitive.”
Márquez played for RCD Espanyol, winning a Copa del Rey Juvenil and leading the Espanyol B team in scoring as it won the 2009 Liga de Tercera División. Márquez won one Catalunya Cup in four seasons with the Espanyol senior team.
Márquez, 30, moved to Mallorca on a 1.2 million euro transfer in 2012, totaling five goals in 56 appearances with Mallorca and Elche through 2014. Márquez has been with Granada CF since 2014, playing 56 matches and captaining the team, also representing the Catalonian national team twice. Márquez last played for Granada as a substitute in a 5-0 loss to Real Madrid Jan. 7.
“I am very happy to join the New York Cosmos,” Márquez said. “I’ve play my whole career in Spain and joining a historic club in the NASL will definitely help me switch gears and stay competitive. I look forward to join the team in preseason and start working towards the 2017 championship.”
