Cosmos set preseason games in Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo
The New York Cosmos will open the preseason with matches in the Dominican Republic against Atlántico FC and Club Atlético Pantoja and the Dominican Republic national team, the team announced Friday.
“We anticipate an intense preseason, starting with our trip to the Dominican Republic,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said. “Our first three matches will help us get the group together and integrate our latest signings to the squad. We look forward to starting the 2017 preseason the best possible way.”
The Cosmos will play Atlántico FC at Leonel Placido Stadium in Puerto Plata on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Atlántico, founded in 2014, competes in the newly-formed Liga Dominicana de Fútbol.
The Cosmos will play 2015 national champion Club Atlético Pantoja at Estadio Olimpico Félix Sanchez in Santo Domingo on Friday, March 3. The Warriors are coached by Venezuelan Lenin Bastidas, who managed Atlántico FC the previous year.
The Cosmos will become the first U.S. club team to play against the Dominican national team, the match set at Estadio Olimpico Félix Sanchez. Kickoff times are to be determined.
The Cosmos visited the Dominican Republic for a match against Violette Athletic Club of Haiti, taking a 2-1 win on a Pelé goal in June 1976.
