Cosmos take opener in Dominican Republic preseason tour

PUERTO PLATA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC -- Midfielder Juan Guerra’s 50th-minute free kick gave the New York Cosmos a 1-0 win over Atlántico FC in their preseason opener at Leonel Plácido Stadium Tuesday night.

“More important than winning was to have the opportunity to rotate our squad and gain momentum,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said. “The 2017 season will start in less than a month, so we will continue working hard to improve as much as we can to be ready for our first match.”

New York dominated early, midfielder Andrés Flores missing wide after making a cut inside to combine with Italian striker Amauri in the sixth minute. In the 20th minute, Flores went in alone on Geancarlos Martinez, who saved.

The Cosmos’ Jimmy Maurer stopped Mauro Gomez in a 1 v 1 situation in the opening half. Cosmos midfielder Danny Szetela came close in the 40th minute, looping a shot over Martinez off the crossbar.

Guerra, a former Venezuela national teamer acquired from the Jacksonville Armada, curled a shot over the wall to score in his Cosmos’ debut.

Brian Holt, who replaced Maurer after halftime, turned away two shots and defended several crosses.

The Cosmos will meet Club Atlético Pantoja at Estadio Olimpico Félix Sanchez in Santo Domingo on Friday.
