Feb. 19, 2009 BOUNCING BACK Ironmen overcome Storm, 13-4
Newark, N.J. -- After losing only a day prior, the New Jersey Ironmen bounced back with a 13-4 victory over the Chicago Storm in Xtreme Soccer League action at Prudential Center on Thursday night.
Forward Adauto Neto scored his 100th career regular-season goal as the Ironmen improved to 5-7 while the Storm fell to 3-8.
After Ironmen honorary captain Paulie "The Magic Man" Malignaggi put the first kick into play in the opening ceremonies, Chicago struck first with midfielder Andy Rosenband recording a two-point goal at 1:36 of the first quarter. Neto hit an equalizing deuce for the hosts at 9:25 in what was No. 100 in the regular season for the Brazilian striker. The first period concluded with a Freddy Moojen goal at 13:08, and the Storm led 4-2.
Newly reacquired forward Shaun David made good on Neto assist 56 seconds into the second period.
The Ironmen gained their first advantage when Rey Martinez pounded home a deflected attempt by playmaker Goran Vasic at 13:34 of the third quarter for a 6-4 lead.
As the fourth quarter began to heat up, XSL points leader Lucio gave New Jersey a little breathing room, 8-4, after hammering a rebound past Storm goalkeeper Jeff Richey at 3:11 with Vasic on the assist. With only a few minutes remaining, Chicago coach Steve Morris pulled Richey in favor of a sixth attacker. The Ironmen took advantage, with Lucio scroing a long triple and a Vasic to Tiguinho goal.
The Ironmen will take to the road for a three-game swing before returning home on Sunday, March 22 to host the Milwaukee Wave for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Their next game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 28 in Detroit against the Ignition.
