NYC FC's Mena to play with Barcelona (Ecuador)

New York City FC Jefferson Mena has joined Barcelona S.C on loan for this season, it was announced Tuesday.

The 27-year old Colombian made 16 appearances for City last season, scoring his first goal in the 4-1 win over Chicago Sept. 23.

Barcelona SC is the reigning champions in the Ecuadorian Serie A.

“Everyone at NYC FC would like to wish Jefferson all the very best for his loan spell in Ecuador," sporting director Claudio Reyna said. “He is a dedicated professional who played his part in our run to the playoffs last season and I’m sure he will play a big role for Barcelona in their 2017 campaign.”

Signed from Independiente Medellin, Colombia in July 2015, Mena played 23 times in total for NYCFC over a season and a half.

Barcelona clinched the Ecuadorian title last year at the expense of city rivals Emelec, which will host NYC FC in a friendly next month.

The side will compete in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.

Mena will train with his new teammates at their preseason camp in Bradenton, Fla.
