New York City FC head coach Patrick Vieira Thursday confirmed that the club is interested in Peruvian international center back Alexander Callens, adding that it is still negotiating with the player.
Earlier in the day, a report out of Peruvian stated that the 24-year-old defender had signed with the Major League Soccer team already.
That wasn't the case.
"He's one of the players we have identified as a good player, a really good player who can do really well for us," Vieira said during an afternoon conference call with the media. "We are in the process of talking and negotiating with the club but there is nothing more we can say about it because of the respect of the player and the club. There is no confirmation to make yet. But that is a player that we are interested [in]."
Callens most recently played with Numancia in Spain from 2015-2017. The Second Division side, however, termindated his contract Jan. 23.
He played 40 games for Numancia, scoring three goals.
"Numancia wishes Callens the best of luck in his personal and professional future," the club said on its website.
Callens started his career with Sport Boys in his native country from 2010-11. He then went on to join Real Sociedad B team, where he sco0red five goals in 86 appearances from 2011-15.
He has made 10 appearances and scored one goal since making his international debut for Peru in 2013.
