Cronin, Colorado clip NYC FC in Desert Diamond Cup

TUCSON, Ariz. -- New York City FC surrendered a late first-half goal to Sam Cronin in falling, 1-0, to the Colorado Rapids in the Desert Diamond Cup Wednesday.

Cronin converted on a volley from the edge of the penalty area on the final kick of the opening half. The Rapids also threatened as a 21st-minute Kevin Doyle shot hit the outside of a post and Dominique Badji headed high at the back post in the 35th minute.

Tommy McNamara, NYC FCs captain in the absence of David Villa (suspended), had a 40th-minute dipping shot from the edge of the penalty area saved by Zac MacMath. NYC FC threatened in the second half as Panamanian Miguel Camargo made his debut, replacing Jalen Brown in the 55th minute. Andrea Pirlo missed on a free kick and Sean Okoli fired high. Frederic Brillant keyed the NYC FC defense, making two key sliding tackles in the opening half.
