Kljestan, Robles lead way as Red Bulls blank NYC FC in preseason match
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sacha Kljestan scored twice and Luis Robles saved a penalty kick as the New York Red Bulls defeated New York City FC, 2-0, in a preseason match at the Kino Sports Complex Wednesday.
The Red Bulls made two substitutions, Bradley Wright-Phillips and Daniel Royer replaced by Brandon Allen and Derrick Etienne Jr. in the 82nd minute.
In the 23rd minute, Kljestan finished from near the penalty spot off a Gonzalo Veron feed, the sequence started as Wright-Phillips took possession just outside the penalty area. In the 43rd minute, Kljestan converted after being played in by Veron.
NYC FC’s Kwame Awuah had a shot deflected wide in the 10th minute, then Ugo Okoli 25-yard free kick was saved by Robles. In the 39th minute, Robles stopped Okoli, who tried a stutter-step runup on a penalty kick, after Khiry Shelton was taken down in the penalty area.
In the second half, Robles stopped a John Stertzer attempt off an Okoli knockdown.
