Red Bulls sign USL defender of the year

HARRISON, N.J. -- The New York Red Bulls have signed center back Aaron Long, the team announced Wednesday.

Long, 24, a native of Oak Hills, Calif., joined the Red Bulls as a trialist for the 2016 preseason and was named USL defender of the year playing for NYRB II.

“We are pleased to add Aaron to our MLS roster,” Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch said. “Aaron has shown a lot of development over the last year and has earned this opportunity. This is also a very proud moment for the club as we successfully transition another player from our USL team to a first-team contract.”

Long, who made 22 appearances for NYRB II before being loaned to the MLS team Sept. 16, made three appearances in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League for the Red Bulls. Long, who played at California-Riverside, was drafted by the Portland Timbers.
