Red Bulls fall behind to Whitecaps, rally behind BWP

HARRISON, N.J. -- Bradley Wright-Phillips’ 62nd-minute goal gave the New York Red Bulls a 1-1 draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series at Red Bull Arena Wednesday night.

The Whitecaps took the lead on a 39th-minute Kekuta Manneh header. Red Bulls captain Sacha Kljestan squandered a chance to equalize as his slow-rolling penalty kick was saved by David Ousted in the 47th minute.

Wright-Phillips scored from near the penalty spot after Gonzalo Veron touched on a cross from Sal Zizzo.

The Red Bulls played with a numerical advantage after Vancouver’s Cristian Techera was red-carded in the 70th minute.

The second leg is scheduled in Vancouver Thursday, March 2.
