Tim Parker called into USMNT for the 1st time

VANCOUVER - Vancouver Whitecaps FC defender Tim Parker of Hicksville, N.Y. earned his first call-up to the United States Wednesday national team for an upcoming training camp that includes friendlies versus Iceland and Canada.

The youthful 23-man roster, featuring a mix of senior team and Ubder-23 players, will hold from Jan. 10 to Feb. 6 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. After camp, Parker will join the Whitecaps in Tucson, Ariz. for the Desert Friendlies.

The former St. John's University standout enjoyed a stellar debut season in Major League, becoming a mainstay on the Whitecaps backline that allowed 36 goals, tied for fewest in the league.

Parker, 22, started 14 of his 15 regular season appearances and contributed to six clean sheets. In theplayoffs action, Parker played the full 90 minutes in both legs of the Western Conference semifinal series against the Portland Timbers, including the scoreless road draw Nov. 1.

Parker was productive in other competitions as well. He earned three man of the match selections. He tallied a goal and an assist in four appearances in Vancouver's Amway Canadian Championship title run and added another goal in four matches in the club's first foray in the CONCACAF Champions League. The 2015 MLS SuperDraft pick also made seven starts for Whitecaps FC 2 in the United Soccer League.

The first part of the camp will be dedicated to developing a solid fitness base for the participating players, before they turn their focus to on-field soccer training to prepare for an international friendly vs. Iceland on Jan. 31. The team will host Canada Feb. 5. Both friendlies will take place at the StubHub Center.
