HANOVER, N.J. – The Red Bulls will get a boost ahead of Wednesday's Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup match against the Cosmos with midfielder Lloyd Sam set to get the start.
Sam, injured two weeks ago in the Open Cup win over the Atlanta Silverbacks, missed the next two matches, including Sunday's 3-1 thrashing of New York City FC. The thought was that Sam's groin injury was healed sufficiently to be a part of the gameday roster for Sunday's derby but he was ruled out of the match several hours before the trip to Yankee Stadium.
But after two more days of training this week, Sam appears ready to play.
“Lloyd's fine, he's starting,” head coach Jesse Marsch said on Tuesday.
It is a tremendous bit of news for a team that now will be playing their third match in the span of a week and face the Columbus Crew this Saturday.
The news is not so good for Ronald Zubar as the central defender was taken off the field on Sunday after 45 minutes. He had an MRI on Monday and is definitely out for this upcoming match.
He did not train with the team on Tuesday.
“Zubar is out. We're still assessing exactly where he's at. He reaggravated his quad a little bit,” Marsch said. “We're not exactly sure how long it's going to be but he won't be ready for this match.”
