LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP
Quarterfinal-Match Day 1 roundup
REAL SALT LAKE 1, LOS ANGELES GALAXY 0
SANDY, Utah - Real Salt Lake used a late goal by Aaron Maund to down the LA Galaxy, 1-0, in the opening 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal on Tuesday night, booking a place in the Semifinal for the second time in three years.
Maund nodded a Luke Mulholland cross inside the right post in the 87th minute.
After sustaining Galaxy pressure through the middle of the first half, RSL nearly took the lead on an own goal in the 42nd minute. Tony Beltran's driven ball from the right threaded into the area before deflecting off Galaxy defender Leonardo, coming within inches of the near post.
Steve Gerrard, the Liverpool legend who became eligible last week to play for L.A., made his competitive debut for the club, coming on for rookie Ignacio Maganto at halftime. He played his first match for the Galaxy on Saturday, an International Champions Cup friendly win over Mexico's Club America, and is expected to make his MLS debut in Friday's California Clasico against San Jose at StubHub Center.
The former England international made an almost immediate impact when he found himself in alone on Jeff Attinella, but the RSL 'keeper made a huge one-on-one stop to keep it level in the 54th minute.
With the win, Real Salt Lake will travel to face the winner of the Houston Dynamo vs. Sporting Kansas City Quarterfinal, which will be played on Tuesday, July 21 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
Also in U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal play, the New York Red Bulls host the Philadelphia Union at Red Bull Arena on July 21, and the Chicago Fire Welcome Orlando City S.C. to Toyota Park on July 22.
