Pancyprian Freedoms edge Red Bulls U-23's in Open Cup
QUEENS, N.Y. -- The New York Pancyprian Freedoms overcame a first-half deficit to register a 2-1 victory over the Red Bulls Under-23 ain the first round of the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup at Belson Stadium at St. John's University Wednesday night.
The three-time U.S. Open Cup champion Freedoms (Cosmopolitan Soccer League) will host Jersey Express in the second round Wednesday.
The Red Bulls carried a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a Zach Knudson penalty kick in the 14th minute, but the Freedoms countered with two second-half goals from Yanick Reyering in the 59th and 66th minutes.
The Red Bulls were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute, after Knudson was tripped up trying to take a touch around the goalkeeper. Knudson had been played through the defense on a flicked pass from Arun Basuljevic. Knudson converted to give the Red Bulls an early lead.
The Freedoms then scored within a six-minute span midway through the second half.
The match was the first of the year for the Red Bulls U-23's, which gathered this week as players return from college. The team consists of 12 Red Bulls Academy products, as well as other invited college players.
The Under-23s compete in the Premier Development League, which kicks off next weekend with a match on Saturday, May 21, against the Jersey Express.
