Cosmos to host Express-Freedoms winner June 1
NEW YORK - For the third consecutive year, the Cosmos will host at least one Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup match.
The North American Soccer League side was selected to host a third-round game at Belson Stadium at St. John's University in Queens, N.Y. on Wednesday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The Cosmos will host the winner of next Wednesday's second-round match between the Jersey Express (Premier Development League) and N.Y. Pancyprian Freedoms (Cosmopolitan Soccer League).
“We’ve always considered the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup a very important tournament and this year is no different,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “We highly respect both, Jersey Express and N.Y. Pancyprian Freedoms, and will work hard to put our best effort to defeat our rival. The first game of the tournament is typically one of the most difficult ones but we have confidence in our squad and capabilities.”
Last year, the Cosmos defeated Jersey, 3-0, in the third round of the Open Cup before they overcame a two-goal deficit to New York City FC via penalty kicks in front of 11,446 fans at Hofstra University. That earned the Cosmos a spot in the fifth round as it lost to the Red Bulls.
The Express advanced to the second round, defeating the Clarkstown Eagles (National Premier Soccer League), 2-1, at Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, N.Y. Wednesday night. The Freedoms recorded a 2-1 win over the Red Bulls Under-23 team at Belson the same night.
Ticketing information for the Open Cup match will be available soon.
