Lansdowne Bhoys upset Riverhounds in Open Cup

PITTSBURGH -– Chalk one up for the underdogs.

Lansdowne Bhoys pulled off a Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup upset on the road, stunning 10-man Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 2-0 in a second-round game at Highmark Stadium Wednesday night.

The Riverhounds played in the professional USL while Lansdowne is an amateur side.

Lansdowne, which plays in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League team will play at the Rochester Rhinos on June 1.

Craig Purcell opened the scoring on a free kick following a Karsten Smith foul in the 10th minute. Taking the set piece from about 30 yards out from the right side, James Nealis curled his kick, finding Purcell’s head. Purcell hit the ball past a diving goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas at far post.

James Kavanagh added an insurance tally off a counterattack in the 76th minute, which saw Oakley Ovan take an odd angled shot on Vargas. The Hounds keeper sent the rebound in front of the box as Kavanagh slotted the second chance home.

Despite the score, the Hounds controlled play for much of the match, finishing with advantages in shots (14-8) and corner kicks (8-4).

Pittsburgh nearly cashed in on two occasions, the first coming in the 55th minute when a Corey Hertzog header bounced off the crossbar and then the goal line. Caleb Postlewait nearly found the net after a cross from Kevin Kerr in the 86th minute. Kerr sent the ball in towards the far post, finding Postlewait, whose glancing shot just missed beating the Bhoys keeper.
