AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE
Lansdowne Bhoys eliminated from Open Cup
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Lansdowne Bhoys' run in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup ended Wednesday night.
The Rochester Rhinos struck twice within 10 minute in the second half to register a 2-0 third-round win over the Cosmopolitan Soccer League side at Sahlen Stadium.
The Rhinos (USL) will host the Red Bulls (MLS) in the fourth round June 15.
After an uneventful first half, Rochester came out with a vengeance and took the lead in the 60th minute as Andre Fortune II tallied off a free kick from 22 yards.
Rochester put the game away as Christian Volesky sent a rocket into the back of the net in the 70th minute, bringing to end the dreams of Open Division qualifiers.
“We told the guys, ‘It may take a while to crack them,’ but we stuck with it,” Rhinos coach Bob Lilley was quoted by the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle. “It was always going to be a tricky game and I think we handled it pretty well.”
