EIGHT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH
USA men rout Aruba, 8-0, at CONCACAF U-20s
KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Talk about a major role reversal.
The United States, which had scored only once in its previous two matches of the competition, struck for six goals in a little more than a half hour en route to an 8-0 triumph over Aruba in Group A action of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championships Wednesday night.
Romain Gall led the way with a first-half hat-trick at National Stadium. Bradford Jamieson was credited with two goals as Tommy Thompson (27th minute), Emerson Hyndman (30th minute), Armando Moreno (84th minute) added scores for the Americans (1-1-1).
Aruba, which has been outscored in its opening two matches, 17-1, fell to 0-0-3. The Caribbean side played the final five minutes with 10 men after Duncan Homoet was assessed his second yellow card.
USA coach Tab Ramos made seven changes from his team's 1-0 loss to Panama on Monday. For the first 15 minutes, it was questionable whether the moves would pay off. Then the floodgates opened for the Americans.
Aruba almost drew first blood in the 12th minute when Homoet broke free on a breakaway on the right side and drilled a shot just outside of the right post before the USA tallied twice within two minutes.
Gall connected for his first goal with a 12-yard shot into the upper right corner in the 16th minute. Jamieson doubled the lead in the 18th minute. Hyndman sent in corner kick to Connor Donovan, who headed the ball off the crossbar. Ben Spencer got the rebound and fired a shot as Jameson was credited with the goal.
After Aruba's Jeanpierre Van der Linden fouled Tyler Turner in the box, Gaal converted the penalty in the 23rd minute, beating goalkeeper JeanMarc Antersijn to the lower left corner.
Four minutes later Thomson made it 4-0 as he headed in a Hyndman corner from five yards. Hyndman tallied on the half hour with a brilliant individual effort, striking the ball into the lower right corner for a 5-0 advantage.
Gall completed his hat-trick in the 31st minute as Hyndman fed him the ball as he rounded Antersijn and scored into an empty net for a 6-0 lead.
Three minutes into the second Jamieson, on a superb run down the right side, scoring at the near post.
Second-half substitute Armando Moreno closed out the scoring, cleaning up on a rebound of a Jamieson shot in the 84th minute.
The USA will take on host Jamaica in Montego Bay on Sunday, while Aruba meets Guatemala.
