5 area players, including NYC FC's James Sands, named to U.S. U-17 spring residency semester


Five area players, including New York City FC Academy defender James Sands and twin brother William,, were named Tuesday to a 32-player roster for the 2017 Spring Semester of the U.S. Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla.

James Sands is with NYC FC in the Major League Soccer team's training camp in Jacksonville, Fla.

The five area players in residency:

* Red Bulls Academy defender Christopher Gloster of Montclair, N.J.

* B.W. Gottschee defender Carlo Ritaccio of Westbury, N.Y.

* Beachside SC defender Tyler Shaver of Greenwich, Conn.

* New York City FC Academy defender James Sands of Rye, N.Y.

* New York City FC Academcy forward William Sands of Rye, N.Y.

Coached by John Hackworth, the U-17 national team has an eventful year ahead, with the U-17 World Cup qualifying tournament set to take place in Panama from April 14-May 8. While the main objective of the Residency Program continues to be player development, the emphasis will shift to building a team that is capable of qualifying for the World Cup.
